Android’s Weather App Disappears, Leaving Disappointment Behind

▼ Summary

– The full-screen, visually rich weather interface on most Android devices is being replaced by a simpler, generic web search results page.
– Pixel devices are unaffected, as the dedicated and highly-rated Pixel Weather app launched in 2024 remains exclusive to them.
– This change is happening because non-Pixel users accessed weather via a shortcut in the Google app, which now redirects to a search.
– The new interface consolidates forecasts into a single, less detailed card, simplifying graphics like humidity and wind icons.
– The removal of this dedicated weather page follows Google’s recent trend of deprecating similar features, like the Wear OS weather app.

A recent shift in how Android devices display weather information has left many users feeling shortchanged. Instead of the visually rich, full-screen report that was previously accessible, tapping the weather icon now often directs users to a standard Google search results page. This change marks a significant downgrade in user experience for non-Pixel owners, stripping away the dedicated, detailed interface in favor of a more generic and condensed presentation.

The previous interface used separate sections of the page for current weather conditions, hourly forecast, and 10-day predictions. This layout provided a clear, at-a-glance overview. The new presentation, however, compresses current conditions and the hourly forecast into a single card, with a small carousel for the 10-day outlook below it. While Google’s familiar frog mascot, Froggy, retains a tiny spot, other graphical elements like humidity, wind, and precipitation indicators have been simplified into basic icons. The overall effect is less immersive and informative.

This alteration stems from the fundamental difference between how Pixel devices and other Android phones handle weather data. Pixel Weather is a dedicated, standalone application lauded for its design. For other Android users, the weather shortcut was never an app but a feature within the Google app that opened a specialized report page. Google has now reconfigured that shortcut to perform a simple web search for “weather,” yielding the less polished results page.

Reports indicate Google began phasing out the old experience several months ago, but the change is now becoming widespread. This move aligns with other recent simplifications, such as the removal of the dedicated Google Weather app from most Wear OS smartwatches, leaving only the Pixel Watch with that functionality.

For those disappointed by this shift, alternatives exist. Several third-party weather applications on the Google Play Store offer sophisticated interfaces and detailed data, with some even mimicking the expressive Material You design language found in Pixel Weather. While not a perfect replacement for the integrated experience, these apps can restore the depth and visual appeal that the new default system lacks.
