Apple Revamps Mac Ordering Process

Originally published on: February 2, 2026
▼ Summary

– Apple has changed its online ordering process for all Mac models to a fully customizable, feature-by-feature system.
– The new process is similar to how iPads are ordered, requiring users to build their configuration entirely from scratch.
– For a MacBook Pro, this involves sequential choices for display size, color, chip, RAM, storage, and accessories.
– This replaces the previous system where customers started with a pre-configured base model and then upgraded select specs.
– The update does not include new M5 Pro or Max chips for the MacBook Pro, as those models are still awaited.

Apple has introduced a significant change to how customers order Mac computers online, shifting to a fully customizable, build-to-order model. This new process applies to the entire Mac lineup, including the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro. The update effectively mirrors the way iPads have been configured for some time, moving away from a selection of pre-set standard configurations.

Previously, shoppers would select from a handful of pre-configured models and then have the option to upgrade specific components like memory or storage. The new system requires building every Mac from the ground up, feature by feature, offering a more granular and potentially more personalized shopping experience. This shift was first noted by industry observers like Macworld and the French blog Consomac.

To illustrate, ordering a MacBook Pro now begins with fundamental choices: selecting either a 14-inch or 16-inch display size and a preferred color. From there, customers can opt for an upgrade to a nano-texture display. The next step involves choosing from the available M-series chip options and core counts specific to the selected screen size. Finally, the process allows for customizing the amount of unified memory (RAM) and SSD storage, selecting a power adapter, and picking a keyboard language.

This à la carte approach provides greater flexibility but also means there is no longer a shortcut by picking a pre-configured base model. It places the onus on the buyer to make every specification decision. Notably, the configuration options for the MacBook Pro remain limited to the current chip generation; the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are still unavailable for selection as Apple has yet to release updated models featuring these processors. Many customers are eagerly awaiting the arrival of these new chips to further enhance the MacBook Pro’s performance capabilities.
