The highly anticipated reboot of the beloved Fable franchise is officially launching this autumn, arriving on Xbox, PC, and PS5. This marks a significant expansion for the series, bringing the open-world action RPG to PlayStation consoles for the first time. The announcement, accompanied by fresh gameplay footage, came during Xbox’s recent Developer Direct event.
This new chapter in the Fable saga is being positioned as a fresh start, offering players a vast, living world of Albion to explore. As an action RPG, it promises deep character customization and a flexible combat system. Beyond traditional heroic quests, the game encourages a more personal touch on the world. Players can engage in activities like building houses and pursuing romantic relationships with villagers, shaping their own unique story within the narrative.
The world of Albion is designed to be reactive, with characters remembering your deeds and treating you accordingly. Your reputation precedes you; evict someone from a property you own, and you might later be met with open disdain in the village square. This dynamic system extends to the game’s approach to morality, which developers suggest will be more nuanced than in the original trilogy.
“We’ve chosen to anchor this around the actions you do, and specifically the things you do in Albion that are witnessed by at least one other person,” explained game director Ralph Fulton. This focus on public perception and consequence aims to create a more organic and impactful role-playing experience. The tone also retains the series’ signature humor, with Fulton confirming that classic antics, like the ability to kick chickens, will indeed be present.
The journey to this release has been a lengthy one. Since the original Fable debuted in 2004, fans have eagerly awaited a proper return to the whimsical yet dark fantasy world. Playground Games, the studio behind the project, first unveiled this “new beginning” at Microsoft’s 2020 Xbox Games Showcase. After subsequent trailers in 2023 and 2024 hinted at the game’s progress, the final release window was confirmed, moving from a previously planned 2025 launch to this fall.
