Ikea is bringing its popular smart home ecosystem into the future by adding Matter support to two of its stylish lamps. This move follows the company’s major announcement of new Matter-ready devices last year and represents a significant upgrade for existing product lines. The integration allows these lamps to work seamlessly with a wider range of smart home platforms and devices, moving beyond Ikea’s own ecosystem.
The company revealed the upgraded fixtures at CES. The iconic Varmblixt donut lamp receives both a physical and technological refresh. Its original glossy finish, meant to reflect ambient light, is replaced with a soft matte white. This new surface better showcases the lamp’s internal, color-changing LEDs. An included Bilresa remote offers control over twelve curated color presets, developed in collaboration with artist Sabine Marcelis, who worked on the lamp’s initial design.
For deeper customization, connecting the lamp to the Ikea Home Smart app via the Dirigera hub unlocks a much broader palette. Users gain access to forty different colors and can adjust the brightness to set the perfect mood. While some of Ikea’s Matter-compatible smart bulbs are already on shelves in Europe, this smart donut lamp, priced at $99.99, is scheduled for an April release.
Joining it is a smart version of the Varmblixt pendant lamp. Priced at $149.99, this fixture focuses on tuning white light rather than displaying colors. Using its included remote, users can shift the illumination from a cool, daylight-mimicking white to a warm, candle-like yellow glow. This makes it ideal for creating different atmospheres throughout the day, from focused morning light to relaxing evening ambiance.
Like its donut-shaped sibling, the pendant lamp can be integrated into the Ikea app and connected to a Matter hub. This connectivity is key, as it enables the lamps to participate in automated smart home routines and work with other certified devices from different brands. By upgrading these designer lamps with Matter, Ikea is ensuring they remain versatile and future-proof components of a connected home.
