With the recent invasion of Frydaal the Chainmaker into the northern territories of Westerland, pledging allegiance to the Ruinous Powers, the timing felt right for a fresh look at some of Warhammer’s most iconic miniatures. Since the Chainmaker’s forces are largely composed of savage Marauders, the Chaos Marauder kits became the natural starting point for this design overhaul.

Marauders have long served as a foundational element within the Chaos armies. Their origins trace back to the 1980s, when they were first introduced as Chaos Thugs. It wasn’t until the 1990s, specifically with the release of the Warhammer supplement Realm of Chaos, that the Marauder Tribes as we recognize them today began to take shape. This era also saw the debut of the first dedicated Chaos Marauder models. Crafted in metal, these early figures were defined by their bare arms, layered furs, and chainmail armor, often brandishing massive two-handed axes or vicious flails. Their aesthetic firmly established the visual identity for the Marauder Tribes moving forward.

Subsequent releases included the initial plastic Chaos Marauders kit, as well as metal Marauder Horsemen, which were later updated into plastic versions a few years afterward. Given the chance to revisit and modernize these kits, the design team returned to the very beginning, exploring both the real-world history of the models and their deep-seated lore within the World of Legend. This deep dive into their brutal origins ensured the new designs would honor the legacy while introducing a new level of detail and character.
