The dystopian science fiction video game Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed 35 million copies sold globally, marking a major commercial success for its creators at CD Projekt. This sales milestone was reached in just five years, outpacing the six-year timeframe it took for the company’s earlier hit, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, to sell 30 million units. Company leadership emphasized that this number represents actual purchases and does not include players accessing the game through subscription platforms.
Michał Nowakowski, joint CEO, described the result as both a significant company achievement and a powerful testament to the franchise’s strength and the effectiveness of their business strategy. He explained that their approach centers on delivering high-quality, narrative-rich games that maintain sales momentum over time. Ongoing content updates and expansions help these titles continue to evolve and hold player interest long after their initial release.
During an investor presentation, CFO Piotr Nielubowicz confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077, along with its Phantom Liberty expansion, serves as the primary revenue driver for the company. In the third quarter alone, the game and its DLC contributed 72.4% of CD Projekt’s total sales revenue.
Updates were also shared regarding the next installment in the series, currently known as Cyberpunk 2. Development is underway at the company’s Boston studio, where the team has grown to include more than 80 developers. The studio has attracted talent with experience on major franchises such as Grand Theft Auto, God of War, World of Warcraft, and The Last of Us. With senior leadership in place, the team is now expanding by hiring for mid-level positions as pre-production continues. The Boston team is projected to double in size over the coming two years.
Nowakowski noted that establishing a dedicated Boston studio for the sequel allows CD Projekt to develop two major AAA games simultaneously. While managing teams across different locations introduces some complexity, he believes the arrangement brings valuable diversity in experience, skills, and creative backgrounds. The company is confident this strategic investment will elevate the next Cyberpunk title to new heights.
Financially, CD Projekt reported third-quarter sales revenue of PLN 349 million, equivalent to approximately $95.7 million. This represents a 53% year-over-year increase, underscoring the continued commercial strength of its game portfolio.
