Top Battery Scientist Stefano Passerini Moves from Germany to China

World-renowned battery scientist Stefano Passerini has accepted a full-time role at Nanjing Normal University in eastern China, marking a significant development in the global energy research landscape. The Italian researcher, aged 65 and a distinguished member of Germany’s National Academy of Sciences, will lead the newly established International Institute for Electrochemical Energy Storage.
During a ceremony held at the university’s Xianlin campus, Passerini explained that his choice to relocate to Nanjing was driven by strong faith in the institution’s research capabilities, skilled personnel, and future promise. He committed to transforming the institute into a globally recognized research center while fostering international partnerships, aiming to elevate the university’s standing in energy science.
Wang Chengbin, the university’s party secretary, described the recruitment as a “milestone” in Nanjing Normal University’s talent acquisition strategy. He confirmed that the institute will be equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and infrastructure, positioning it as a central force in advancing China’s “dual carbon” objectives, peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
