– The service is co-funded by the EU and managed by a consortium of private cybersecurity firms, CERTs, and academic institutions, led by Czech company Whalebone.
– DNS4EU offers voluntary, uncensored DNS resolution with options to block malicious sites, inappropriate content, and ads, while respecting local regulations.
– The service leverages threat intelligence from CERTs and academic partners to quickly block malicious threats across multiple EU regions.
– DNS4EU provides tailored solutions for governments, public institutions, and telcos, reducing costs and workload for SOC teams by outsourcing DNS security.
The European Union has unveiled DNS4EU, a new privacy-focused DNS resolution service designed to bolster digital sovereignty while offering secure browsing alternatives for citizens and organizations. This initiative provides an EU-based solution to reduce reliance on non-European DNS providers, prioritizing speed, reliability, and robust security measures.
DNS (Domain Name System) acts as the internet’s phonebook, converting website names into numerical IP addresses that computers understand. While most users default to their ISP’s DNS or public services like Google or Cloudflare, DNS4EU offers a regionally controlled alternative with enhanced privacy protections.
Backed by EU funding and developed by a consortium of cybersecurity firms, CERTs, and academic institutions across 10 member states, DNS4EU aims for long-term sustainability. Czech cybersecurity leader Whalebone spearheads the project, ensuring compliance with EU regulations without compromising user autonomy. Importantly, the service remains voluntary, with no government access to configuration or data.
For individual users, DNS4EU provides five customizable resolution options, including unfiltered browsing or protections against malware, fraud, and inappropriate content. It also blocks ads where possible, leveraging threat intelligence from European CERTs and CSIRTs to rapidly identify and mitigate cyber risks across borders.
Businesses and public institutions benefit from tailored DNS-level security, reducing the need for costly in-house infrastructure. Governments, healthcare providers, and telecom operators can offload DNS management to DNS4EU’s specialized team, freeing up internal resources.
By fostering regional collaboration and threat intelligence sharing, the service strengthens Europe’s cyber defenses while upholding privacy standards. Unlike global competitors, DNS4EU operates under strict EU data protection laws, ensuring transparency and user control.
As digital sovereignty becomes a priority, DNS4EU represents a significant step toward a more secure and self-reliant European internet ecosystem. Whether for personal use or enterprise security, it provides a trusted alternative in an increasingly interconnected world.
