Navigating the dense legalese of Terms of Service agreements can feel like an impossible task for anyone without a legal background. Fortunately, a new wave of artificial intelligence tools now offers a practical solution by generating clear, concise summaries of these lengthy documents. We evaluated several popular AI platforms to determine which ones deliver the most useful and accurate overviews, saving you both time and frustration.

Let’s face it, reading a full Terms of Service document is a monumental chore. These agreements are often intentionally long and complex, making it difficult for the average person to understand their rights and obligations. However, skimming them is risky, as they contain critical information about data privacy, user responsibilities, and security practices. This is where AI summarization tools step in, acting as a personal assistant to distill the essential points from hundreds of pages of text.

While AI is not infallible and can occasionally produce errors or “hallucinations,” a well-crafted summary still provides the core information you need. The most reliable tools even cite their sources, allowing you to verify details directly from the original document. To put this to the test, we analyzed the same Apple privacy policy using seven different AI services: ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Claude AI, Perplexity, Grok, and Meta AI.

ChatGPT delivered an exceptionally well-structured summary of Apple’s privacy terms. It organized the information into eleven distinct sections, each broken down with bullet points for easy digestion. A final section neatly outlined the key takeaways. The summary was comprehensive enough to be informative yet concise enough to read from start to finish without feeling overwhelmed. ChatGPT proved highly effective at balancing detail with readability.

Microsoft Copilot fell short in its interpretation of the privacy page. Its summary was notably brief and lacked substantive detail on the main topics. The writing style itself was dry, making the summary less engaging than the original legal text. For anyone seeking a deep understanding, Copilot’s offering was insufficient.

Google Gemini started strong with a clear explanation of how Apple defines and collects personal data. It captured most of the salient points effectively. However, the overall summary felt too abbreviated. While adequate for a quick glance, it lacked the depth of information that other tools, like ChatGPT, provided, leaving the reader wishing for more elaboration.

Claude AI continued the trend of brief summaries, organizing the privacy policy into eight sections. Unfortunately, each section contained only two or three sentences, offering a surface-level overview without meaningful depth. Similar to Gemini, Claude’s summary works if you are in a rush, but it doesn’t satisfy if you need a thorough understanding.

Perplexity managed to excel even with a concise format. It efficiently communicated the core elements: what data Apple collects, why it’s collected, how it’s used and shared, and user control rights. It then addressed each major topic in a clear and readable manner. Despite its brevity, the summary felt complete and informative, leaving no unanswered questions.

Grok also provided a fairly brief but helpful analysis. It began with a general overview of Apple’s privacy policies, covered major topics with bullet points, and concluded with an intelligent analysis of the pros and cons concerning user privacy. The writing was engaging and easy to follow, making it a solid contender.

Meta AI delivered the least impressive performance. Its summary was extremely brief, consisting of just two sections with a handful of bullet points. While some points were useful, it omitted a significant amount of information captured by the other AIs. Even when prompted for more details, it produced another overly brief summary, making it the least reliable tool for this task.

Most AI tools performed reasonably well in this limited test, with the notable exceptions of Meta AI and Copilot. The majority included source citations and attempted to continue the conversation by offering further assistance. Our top two recommendations are ChatGPT and Perplexity. ChatGPT impressed with its detailed yet readable breakdown, while Perplexity delivered a remarkably efficient and informative bite-sized summary. Either of these tools would be an excellent choice for quickly understanding complex Terms of Service agreements.
