A significant internal protest is brewing at Amazon, with more than a thousand employees raising serious concerns about the company’s aggressive artificial intelligence strategy. An internal advocacy group revealed that these workers have anonymously endorsed an open letter criticizing what they describe as an “all-costs-justified, warp-speed approach to AI development.” They argue this relentless push could inflict severe harm on democratic institutions, employment stability, and the global environment.

The organizing effort was led by members of Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, who started collecting signatures last month. After surpassing their initial target, the group publicly released the job titles of the Amazon signatories. They also confirmed that over 2,400 supporters from other major technology firms, including industry giants like Google and Apple, have added their names in solidarity.

The list of internal supporters is notably diverse, including high-ranking engineers, senior product leaders, marketing managers, and warehouse personnel from across the company’s many divisions. One senior engineering manager, with more than two decades of experience at Amazon, explained their decision to sign. They expressed a belief that a contrived competitive “race” to dominate AI has given corporate leaders a pretext to override the well-being of both employees and the planet.

“The current generation of AI has become almost like a drug that companies like Amazon obsess over,” the employee stated, requesting anonymity due to fears of workplace retaliation. They further alleged that AI is being used as a justification for workforce reductions, with the resulting financial savings being funneled into data centers for AI products that currently lack a paying customer base.

Amazon, in line with its tech industry peers, is committing tens of billions of dollars to build new data centers dedicated to training and operating generative AI systems. These investments support a range of applications, from internal tools that assist with coding to consumer-facing services like the shopping assistant Rufus. The commercial incentive is clear; CEO Andy Jassy recently projected that Rufus alone is on a path to generate an additional $10 billion in annual sales for the company, emphasizing that the technology is continuously improving.

However, the immense power requirements of these AI systems are creating a major environmental dilemma. Utility companies are increasingly relying on coal plants and other carbon-intensive energy sources to meet the surging electricity demands of the data center boom. The employees’ letter presents a series of demands, calling on Amazon to transition its data centers away from carbon-based fuels. It also insists the company prohibit its AI technologies from being used for surveillance or mass deportation programs and cease mandating that staff use AI in their daily tasks. The letter powerfully states, “We, the undersigned Amazon employees, have serious concerns about this aggressive rollout during the global rise of authoritarianism and our most important years to reverse the climate crisis.”
