The new Sora app for Android has made an explosive entrance into the market, achieving nearly half a million downloads on its very first day. According to fresh data from app analytics firm Appfigures, the AI video creation tool from OpenAI was installed an estimated 470,000 times across the countries where it launched. This powerful start significantly overshadows the initial iOS release, generating over four times the number of first-day installs.
It’s important to note, however, that the two launches weren’t identical in scope. The iOS version was initially rolled out on a much smaller scale, available only to users in the United States and Canada and operating under a strict invitation-only system. The Android release, by contrast, debuted across a broader international footprint including the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Furthermore, OpenAI removed the invite-wall for its key markets in late October, allowing open access in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Korea.
Even with its earlier exclusive status, Sora proved to be an immediate sensation. The iOS app surpassed one million installs within its first week and rapidly climbed to the top of the App Store rankings. It continues to hold a strong position, currently sitting at number four on the U.S. iPhone Top Free Charts.
The app’s core function enables users to generate videos through simple text prompts. A popular feature called Cameos allows people to animate themselves and their friends using AI. The content is displayed in a vertical, scrollable feed reminiscent of TikTok, providing a stream of videos created by the community.
Appfigures has also updated its initial estimates for the Sora iOS launch day. Earlier models projected roughly 56,000 downloads, but with more data now available, the firm has revised that number upward to approximately 110,000. Of those, about 69,300 installations occurred in the United States.
In a direct comparison, the Android version saw around 296,000 U.S. installs as part of its 470,000 global total. This indicates that substantial public interest in the AI video maker persists, even after the initial excitement surrounding the iOS release has settled.
Sora now finds itself in direct competition with other major players, including Meta AI. Meta’s own mobile application expanded to European users recently, following its prior debut in the United States.
