Google Maps is introducing a significant upgrade by integrating its powerful Gemini AI, transforming the way drivers interact with the app for a smarter, hands-free navigation experience. This enhancement allows users to ask questions and perform tasks without taking their hands off the wheel, making journeys safer and more informative.
While on the road, you can now ask Gemini about points of interest along your route. The AI can provide details about nearby restaurants, answer queries on unrelated topics such as sports scores or news updates, and even handle practical actions like scheduling calendar events. The system supports conversational follow-ups, so you might inquire, “Show me a reasonably priced vegan restaurant close to my route, within a couple of miles,” and then ask, “How is the parking situation there?”
Another useful feature enables drivers to report traffic incidents directly through Gemini. Additionally, Maps will proactively alert you to disruptions ahead, helping you avoid delays and choose better paths in real time.

A standout innovation combines Gemini with Street View imagery to deliver more intuitive navigation guidance. Instead of generic instructions like “turn right in 500 feet,” the app will reference visible landmarks, such as a specific gas station, popular diner, or notable building, just before your turn. Gemini cross-references data from 250 million locations with Street View visuals to pick out the most recognizable and helpful landmarks for these prompts.
Integration with Google Lens further enriches the experience. By pointing your phone’s camera at a restaurant or landmark, you can ask questions like, “What is this place known for?” or “Why is it popular?” Lens and Gemini work together to provide immediate, relevant answers about your surroundings.
These new Gemini-powered capabilities will begin appearing on both iOS and Android over the next few weeks. Support for Android Auto is expected to follow shortly. Initially, traffic alerts will be available to Android users in the U.S., while landmark-based navigation instructions will launch in the U.S. on both major mobile platforms. The Lens with Gemini feature is scheduled to go live in the U.S. by the end of the month.
