YouTube’s New AI Can Now Detect Your Face

▼ Summary

YouTube has rolled out likeness-detection technology to eligible creators in its Partner Program to identify AI-generated content using their face or voice.
– Creators can request removal of such content to prevent misuse, like unauthorized endorsements or misinformation, as seen in past cases.
– To use the tool, creators must verify their identity via a QR code, photo ID, and a selfie video in the “Likeness” tab.
– Once access is granted, creators can view detected videos and submit removal requests based on privacy or copyright guidelines, with an option to archive videos.
– YouTube supports the NO FAKES Act legislation and allows creators to opt out of the technology at any time, stopping scans within 24 hours.

YouTube has officially launched its new likeness-detection technology for creators enrolled in the YouTube Partner Program, marking a significant step in the platform’s efforts to combat AI-generated misuse of personal identity. This rollout follows a successful pilot phase, and eligible creators have already been notified via email. The system is designed to identify and manage content that features synthetic versions of a creator’s face or voice, empowering individuals to take action against unauthorized use.

The technology aims to prevent misuse of a person’s likeness, whether for promoting products without consent or spreading false information. Recent incidents, such as Elecrow employing an AI-generated voice clone of YouTuber Jeff Geerling to endorse its offerings, highlight the growing need for such protective measures.

On its Creator Insider channel, YouTube shared a step-by-step guide for accessing the tool. Creators must navigate to the “Likeness” tab, agree to data processing terms, and scan a QR code using a smartphone. This directs them to a verification webpage where they provide a photo ID and record a short selfie video. Once approved, users gain the ability to review detected videos and submit removal requests based on privacy guidelines or copyright claims. An archiving option is also available for those who prefer not to delete content immediately.

Creators retain full control over their participation and can opt out of the service whenever they choose. If they decide to discontinue, YouTube will halt video scanning within 24 hours.

The likeness-detection feature has been in development since earlier this year. Last year, YouTube disclosed a collaboration with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to assist celebrities, athletes, and creators in identifying AI-generated content that mimics their appearance or voice.

In a related move, YouTube voiced support in April for the NO FAKES Act, proposed legislation focused on curbing deceptive and harmful content created using AI replicas of an individual’s image or voice.
