NetApp has introduced a powerful set of new solutions designed to strengthen its enterprise data platform, specifically tailored to meet the demands of modern artificial intelligence workloads. These innovations aim to provide organizations with a secure, scalable, and unified data foundation that simplifies the entire AI lifecycle, from data preparation to deployment. By integrating high-performance storage with intelligent data services, NetApp enables businesses to accelerate AI-driven initiatives like retrieval-augmented generation and inference across hybrid and multicloud environments.

A key component of this announcement is the NetApp AFX, an enterprise-grade disaggregated all-flash storage system built for intensive AI applications. AFX decouples performance and capacity, allowing each to scale independently while delivering the robust data management and cyber resilience NetApp is known for. Certified for NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD, AFX supports linear performance scaling up to 128 nodes, offers exabyte-scale capacity, and features optional DX50 data compute nodes that leverage NVIDIA accelerated computing for real-time data cataloging.

Complementing AFX is the NetApp AI Data Engine (AIDE), a comprehensive service that streamlines AI data workflows. AIDE provides a global, up-to-date view of a customer’s entire NetApp data estate, enabling fast search and curation while connecting data seamlessly to any AI model or tool. It automates data synchronization and change detection, eliminating redundant copies and embedding security guardrails throughout the data lifecycle. Built on the NVIDIA AI Data Platform, AIDE incorporates NVIDIA AI Enterprise software and NIM microservices for advanced capabilities like vectorization, semantic discovery, and policy-driven workflows.

Syam Nair, Chief Product Officer at NetApp, emphasized that “the new NetApp AFX systems give customers a trusted, proven choice in on-premises enterprise storage to rapidly propel AI innovation forward.” He added that “NetApp AI Data Engine enables customers to seamlessly connect their entire data estate across hybrid multicloud environments, collapsing multiple data preparation steps into an integrated engine built with NVIDIA accelerated computing.”

Further expanding its ecosystem integrations, NetApp now offers an Object REST API for Azure NetApp Files, currently in public preview. This capability allows customers to directly access NFS and SMB datasets through Azure services, including Microsoft Fabric, Azure OpenAI, and Azure Machine Learning, without needing to move or copy data into a separate object store. Users can analyze data, train models, and build applications on existing datasets while maintaining the performance and reliability of Azure NetApp Files.

Additionally, new FlexCache capabilities in Azure NetApp Files enable a unified global namespace across cloud and on-premises environments. Data stored in other ONTAP-based systems, whether in customer data centers or across multiple clouds, can be instantly visible and writeable within an ANF environment, with data transferred only when needed. Enterprises can also use SnapMirror to migrate data and snapshots effortlessly between environments, supporting hybrid use cases like continuous backup, disaster recovery, and workload balancing.

Justin Boitano, VP of Enterprise AI Products at NVIDIA, noted that “NetApp’s data platform has transformed into an AI-native storage platform by integrating NVIDIA accelerated computing and software. With this new platform, organizations can index and search vast amounts of unstructured data across their enterprise to drive innovation and deliver real business impact.”

Together, NetApp AFX and the AI Data Engine provide a resilient, high-performance architecture that helps enterprises confidently adopt and scale AI, leveraging decades of NetApp ONTAP expertise in a modern, disaggregated storage framework.
