Sam Altman, the company’s CEO, unveiled the platform during OpenAI’s recent Dev Day, describing it as a complete collection of building blocks available within the open AI platform. The goal is to help developers move their agent projects from initial concept to full-scale production with significantly reduced effort and complexity. This strategic launch underscores a major push by OpenAI to broaden developer adoption by simplifying the agent-building process. It also represents a competitive maneuver in a market where numerous AI platforms are vying to provide businesses with integrated tools for developing sophisticated autonomous agents capable of executing complex, multi-step tasks rather than merely generating single responses.
AgentKit was one of several significant updates shared at the event, which also featured the new capability for building applications directly inside ChatGPT, a platform that now sees 800 million weekly active users.
The toolkit is built around several core components. The first is Agent Builder, which Altman likened to a “Canva for building agents.” This feature offers a fast, visual method for designing an agent’s logic, operational steps, and core concepts. It is constructed on the foundation of the responses API, a tool already familiar to hundreds of thousands of developers.
Another major component is ChatKit, which supplies a straightforward, embeddable chat interface. This allows developers to seamlessly integrate rich chat functionalities into their own applications. Developers can fully customize these experiences, incorporating their own branding and unique workflows to maintain their product’s distinct identity.
A third element, Evals for Agents, delivers a suite of tools for measuring AI agent performance. This includes step-by-step trace grading, specialized datasets for evaluating individual agent components, automated prompt optimization, and the ability to run performance evaluations on external models directly from the OpenAI platform.
Finally, AgentKit provides access to OpenAI’s connector registry. This enables developers to securely link their agents to internal company tools and third-party systems through a centralized admin control panel, all while preserving stringent security protocols and administrative oversight.
To demonstrate the platform’s ease of use, OpenAI engineer Christina Huang built a complete AI workflow and two functional AI agents live on stage in under eight minutes. He also noted that the company has already onboarded several launch partners who are successfully scaling their agents using the new AgentKit system.
