▼ Summary

– OpenAI has launched a new version of its Sora AI video generator alongside a social video app for iPhones, currently invite-only and available in the US and Canada.
– The Sora app resembles TikTok with a video feed and allows users to record short videos that others can turn into AI-generated deepfakes with their consent.
– Users can grant permission for others to create “cameos” using their likeness, and they retain co-ownership with the ability to delete or revoke access at any time.
– The app includes a “Remix” feature for interacting with videos but currently limits AI-generated videos to 10 seconds in length.
– OpenAI restricts generating videos of public figures without their consent and currently blocks X-rated or extreme content on the platform.

A new social video application from OpenAI is making waves, allowing users to create AI-generated deepfakes of their friends with explicit permission. This iPhone-exclusive app, also named Sora, builds on the Sora AI video generator released late last year. Currently available on an invite-only basis to users in the United States and Canada, the platform resembles TikTok in its interface, presenting a feed of videos users can swipe through. Rather than focusing on duets or stitches, however, it prompts individuals to record brief video clips. These clips can then be transformed by others into new AI-generated videos, but only if the original person agrees.

During a recent press briefing, company representatives described the launch as potentially a ChatGPT moment for video generation.” Each user who gains access also receives four additional invitations to extend to friends, though there is no confirmed timeline for an Android release or expansion into other international markets.

Through a feature called “cameos,” Sora users can grant friends, or even the entire user base, permission to produce videos featuring their own likeness using the upgraded Sora 2 model. OpenAI emphasizes that the individual whose appearance is used becomes a “co-owner” of the resulting video, retaining the ability to delete the content or withdraw access at any time. Similar to TikTok, the app includes a “Remix” option, letting people engage with popular videos and trends. For the time being, video generation is limited to ten-second clips.

While the platform currently enforces strict limitations around creating videos of public figures, OpenAI hinted these restrictions could evolve. At present, public figures cannot be generated in Sora unless they personally upload a cameo and provide consent for their likeness to be used. This rule applies universally: if someone hasn’t uploaded a cameo, their image cannot be replicated in the app. OpenAI staff also confirmed that it is currently “impossible to generate” adult content or material considered extreme using the platform.
