Smartphone manufacturer Nothing has stepped into the AI-driven app creation space with its new platform called Playground. This tool enables users to build small applications directly from text prompts, which can then be deployed on Nothing’s Essential Apps ecosystem. Currently, Playground supports the creation of widgets, such as a flight tracker, meeting summary tool, or virtual pet, either from scratch using natural language or by customizing existing apps on the platform. For those with coding experience, the option to modify and refine app behavior is also available.

The launch arrives shortly after Nothing secured $200 million in funding, with Tiger Global leading the investment round. CEO Carl Pei had previously expressed the company’s ambition to develop an AI-integrated operating system and create hardware tailored for artificial intelligence. In a recent discussion, Pei pointed out that major smartphone brands have been slow to innovate on the software side. He believes AI presents an opportunity to make operating systems more personalized, leveraging the contextual data devices already gather about users.

So far, Nothing has released just one AI-powered application, Essential Space, which offers screenshot sharing, voice note recording, and meeting transcription. However, these features are already widely available on most modern smartphones, either natively or through third-party apps. This raises questions about the unique value Playground brings to users accustomed to established ecosystems.

Despite its growing reputation, Nothing remains a minor player in the global smartphone market, holding under 1% of worldwide shipments according to IDC. Still, Pei sees the company’s size as an advantage, allowing it to move quickly and experiment with AI-specific hardware and software integrations.

Playground’s “vibe-coding” approach, creating apps via prompts, sounds promising, but similar efforts in the past have struggled with adoption. Analytics from AppFigures indicate that security and maintenance issues often hinder such platforms. Pei recognizes these concerns and emphasizes that maintaining strong security while empowering developers will be essential as the platform evolves.

For now, Nothing is not monetizing Playground, and there are no immediate plans to introduce a paid tier. The company’s current focus is on fostering an active creator community and rewarding those who make meaningful contributions to the Essential Apps platform.
