Dubai’s public bus system has achieved a remarkable 50 percent improvement in punctuality, a leap forward made possible by integrating artificial intelligence and big data analytics into daily operations. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) credits this success to a comprehensive strategy that employs real-time schedule adjustments, automated protocols, and machine learning across the transport network.

Marwan Al Zarooni, director of Buses at the RTA’s Public Transport Agency, reported that the re-engineering of operating schedules using live data was central to this achievement. He also highlighted a 4 percent reduction in bus trip cancellations, a direct outcome of applying an artificial intelligence model. Dedicated data-driven procedures have further reduced unnecessary bus idling, contributing to lower carbon emissions.

To bolster passenger safety, the RTA developed a data-informed weather response system within its crisis management structure. This system improves operational responses during severe weather events. These innovations have earned the RTA significant recognition, including the “Top Participating Department” award in the 2024 Scientific Research Award, two first-tier research awards, and four publications in leading scientific journals.

Al Zarooni emphasized that data utilization is a cornerstone of the RTA’s smart management vision. He stated that artificial intelligence has transitioned from a theoretical concept to a practical tool that actively makes Dubai’s bus network quicker, more dependable, and environmentally friendly for hundreds of thousands of daily users. AI now serves as essential infrastructure, allowing the RTA to predict needs, adapt services, and continually improve the passenger experience.

Looking ahead, the RTA’s 2025–2030 roadmap outlines several key projects. These include broadening the use of predictive analytics, launching AI-assisted driver training programs, and enhancing customer service through artificial intelligence. The authority also plans to introduce an open data platform to foster collaboration and innovation with academic and industry partners.

Beyond bus services, the RTA is making substantial investments in integrated smart mobility solutions designed to transform the emirate’s entire transportation landscape. This strategic push aims to build a seamless, efficient, and sustainable network that aligns with Dubai’s rapid urban expansion and smart city goals.

Major infrastructure upgrades form a critical part of this vision, focusing on easing traffic congestion and improving links between new residential and commercial areas. These developments are consistent with the Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040 and the RTA’s own Strategic Plan 2023–2030, which prioritize better connectivity between different transport modes and an enhanced commuter experience. The addition of pedestrian and cyclist bridges further supports safe and accessible non-motorized travel.

A notable advancement in smart mobility is the testing of autonomous vehicles. The RTA has issued permits to several leading technology firms, including Baidu’s Apollo Go, WeRide, and Pony.ai, allowing them to conduct operational trials of self-driving vehicles on Dubai’s roads. These partnerships seek to establish a global standard for autonomous public transport, introducing robo-taxis and self-driving fleets into the urban environment.

This initiative supports the Dubai Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which targets having 25 percent of all trips be smart and driverless by 2030. The goal spans multiple transport types, including metro, tram, bus, taxi, marine transport, and shuttle services.

Artificial intelligence and big data serve as the foundational elements for these interconnected systems, enabling real-time traffic management, predictive maintenance, and safety improvements. The RTA has also used AI-driven analytics to guide the conversion of its fleet toward eco-friendly models. Approximately 55 percent of staff vehicles have already been switched to sustainable alternatives, helping to cut carbon emissions and advance green mobility objectives.

By combining operational improvements with a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility and passenger safety, the RTA’s holistic AI strategy establishes a new benchmark for technology deployment in public transport. The ongoing integration of innovative technologies across infrastructure, vehicle automation, and data-centric management is creating a smart, sustainable transportation environment ready to meet future demands.
