The five new facilities are slated for Shackelford County, Texas; Dona Ana County, New Mexico; Lordstown, Ohio; Milam County, Texas; and a confidential location in the Midwest. Together, these sites are projected to supply a colossal 7 gigawatts of power, a substantial step toward the project’s ultimate goal of 10 gigawatts by the end of 2025. This development puts the entire initiative ahead of its original schedule. The project, which involves partnerships with Oracle, SoftBank, and Emirati investment firm MGX, initially secured a staggering $500 billion in funding.

OpenAI estimates that the construction and operation of these data centers will create more than 25,000 on-site jobs, with tens of thousands of additional positions generated across the country. In a related development, chipmaker Nvidia recently revealed plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI to support further data center construction, highlighting the intense financial commitment driving the AI sector.

This building boom is part of a broader technological race. As companies compete for AI supremacy, the need for computational power has skyrocketed. Training and operating sophisticated models like ChatGPT requires massive data centers packed with specialized processors, a competition that has propelled Nvidia to unprecedented financial heights. Data centers are notorious for their high energy consumption and cooling requirements. They often demand vast quantities of water to prevent overheating, a particular concern given that many are built in arid western states already facing seasonal water shortages.
