Oman has officially launched its first dedicated Artificial Intelligence Zone, a strategic move designed to attract international technology start-ups and establish the nation as a leading center for AI innovation in the region. Announced at Comex 2025, this groundbreaking project is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones. Situated in Al Seeb within the Muscat Governorate, the zone represents a significant step forward in Oman’s economic diversification and technological advancement plans.

The initial development phase will span 100,000 square meters and is projected to draw investments totaling approximately RO 100 million. A local firm, Afouq Investment & Development, has been selected to lead the infrastructure development in collaboration with Egypt’s Prime Group. This partnership aims to deliver a fully integrated environment tailored for AI-focused enterprises from Oman, the Middle East, and Africa. The facilities are intended to nurture innovation, draw foreign capital, and generate high-skill employment opportunities.

According to Dr. Seema al Kaabi, Acting Director General at the Ministry, the initiative will significantly enhance Oman’s technological capabilities while supporting start-ups in scaling their operations both regionally and internationally. Afouq will manage day-to-day operations, investor outreach, and initiatives aimed at boosting local economic value, all while ensuring the project aligns with broader national social responsibility objectives.

Siham al Harthy, Chairperson of Afouq, highlighted the zone’s unique approach of blending cutting-edge technological infrastructure with elements of Omani cultural heritage. This fusion is expected to create a distinctive and appealing environment for global innovators. Mahmoud Farrag, CEO of Prime Group, noted that international partnerships are already in development to incorporate world-class expertise, reinforcing Oman’s position as a forward-looking destination for investment and technological progress.
