Meta has announced a significant restructuring of its artificial intelligence leadership, placing Yann LeCun, the company’s chief AI scientist and head of the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) group, under the direction of Alexandr Wang. The 28-year-old founder of Scale AI was recently appointed to lead the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Lab, a division dedicated to advancing superintelligent AI systems.
This reorganization involves the dissolution of Meta’s former artificial general intelligence (AGI) department. FAIR will remain the company’s primary research hub, continuing its work on foundational AI concepts that may later inform the development of more advanced models.
In addition to FAIR, Meta is establishing three new specialized teams: a compact group focused on large-scale models (tentatively named TBD Lab), a product-oriented research unit, and a centralized technical infrastructure team. According to an internal memo from Wang, the objective is to create stronger integration among these groups to accelerate research and development across Meta’s AI initiatives.
