Grad’s policy is to “mitigate first, investigate second” when facing potential threats, a stance he enacted before any employee had even installed the software. He is not alone in his apprehension. A Meta executive, speaking anonymously, recently told his team that using OpenClaw on regular work laptops could cost them their jobs, fearing the tool’s unpredictable nature could lead to a catastrophic privacy breach.
Originally launched as a free, open-source project by solo founder Peter Steinberger last November, OpenClaw’s popularity exploded as developers added features and shared their experiences online. The tool requires some technical setup but then operates with minimal direction, interacting with other applications to handle chores like file organization, web research, and online shopping. Its recent acquisition by OpenAI, which pledges to maintain its open-source status through a foundation, has done little to assuage immediate security fears within the corporate world.
The bans reveal how companies are prioritizing security over experimentation. At the software firm Valere, an employee’s internal post about potentially trying OpenClaw was met with an immediate and strict prohibition from the company’s president. CEO Guy Pistone explains the grave concern: if the AI gained access to a developer’s machine, it could potentially infiltrate cloud services and expose client data, including credit card details and proprietary codebases. Pistone noted that the software’s ability to “clean up some of its actions” was particularly alarming, as it could obscure its tracks after a security incident.
In a controlled experiment, Valere’s research team later ran OpenClaw on an isolated, old computer to study its flaws. Their findings, detailed in a report, advised critical safeguards like restricting who can command the AI and securing its internet-connected control panel with a strong password. They also highlighted a fundamental vulnerability: users must “accept that the bot can be tricked.” For example, if configured to summarize email, OpenClaw could be manipulated by a malicious message instructing it to exfiltrate files from the user’s computer.
Despite the current risks, Pistone sees a potential path forward. He has tasked a Valere team with a 60-day investigation into building robust safeguards for business use. He acknowledges the high stakes, stating that whoever successfully secures this type of agentic AI for enterprise environments will have a major advantage. For now, however, the prevailing sentiment among tech leaders is one of extreme caution, with bans serving as the first line of defense against an innovative but perilous new technology.
