Success in this new agentic era hinges on treating agent identity with the same rigor historically reserved for human users, enabling secure and scalable autonomy without compromising security or compliance.

The workforce of AI agents is scaling much faster than traditional identity and security frameworks can adapt. Organizations are deploying these agents everywhere, from live production systems to pilot projects and broader automation initiatives. This rapid expansion creates a sprawling agentic workforce that often operates without the corresponding governance and identity and access management (IAM) controls typically applied to human employees. Confidence in existing IAM tools to manage these new digital workers remains low, revealing a critical gap: identity architectures designed for people are not equipped to govern autonomous systems.

Compounding the problem, responsibility for managing agent identities is frequently undefined. Accountability is often shared among security teams, IT departments, DevOps, IAM specialists, governance and compliance officers, and emerging AI security groups. This fragmented ownership leads to gaps in oversight and inconsistent enforcement of security policies. Many organizations also express deep uncertainty about their ability to pass compliance audits related to AI agent activity, as governance often relies on informal practices rather than clearly defined, auditable frameworks. Instead of deploying purpose-built systems for agent discovery and governance, companies are attempting to retrofit existing tools, which results in partial, delayed, and siloed visibility.

Monitoring and traceability suffer from similar inconsistencies. Many companies cannot reliably determine what their agents did, what data or systems they accessed, under which authorization, or in response to which request. This lack of clarity fuels caution; survey respondents indicated that high-stakes actions like accessing sensitive data, making system changes, approving financial transactions, and granting permissions still overwhelmingly require human oversight. This highlights both a limited trust in agents operating fully autonomously in critical scenarios and the fact that agent governance has yet to reach a mature, continuously auditable state.

Despite these challenges, awareness is growing. Security and governance gaps are becoming more visible, prompting enterprises to increase their identity and security budgets specifically to accommodate AI agents. Agent identity is beginning to emerge as a distinct, funded component of enterprise security architectures. When asked about their top concerns, professionals point to a range of issues: sensitive data exposure, unauthorized or unintended agent actions, a shortage of internal expertise, and credential misuse or over-provisioning. Additional worries include the lack of agent identity standards, difficulty in discovering or registering agents, integration challenges with legacy systems, and insufficient organizational awareness or training.
