BYOK: My New Distraction-Free Writing Tool

I’ve been searching for years for a writing setup that disappears completely when I’m working. The latest candidate to cross my desk is BYOK, short for Bring Your Own Keyboard. It’s a no-frills $199 device , a black plastic rectangle with a low-resolution LCD screen that lets you type and edit text, and that’s just about it.

I’ve tried dedicated writing apps and even converted an old laptop into a writerdeck, but nothing ever felt quite right. Last year, I paired a Boox Palma with a NuPhy Air mechanical keyboard, and that came close. The fast-refreshing E Ink display delivered the most satisfying typing experience I’d found, and Obsidian kept everything synced across my devices. But Boox’s operating system is a mess , bloated, slow, and full of distractions I didn’t want.

BYOK sidesteps all of that. There’s no app store, no notifications, no web browser. You plug in your own keyboard via USB-C or Bluetooth, and the screen shows a simple, monochrome text editor. You can bold, italicize, and add headers, but that’s the extent of the formatting. Files are saved locally, and you can export them as plain text or Markdown.

The screen is not backlit, so you’ll need good ambient light. And the plastic build feels cheap , it creaks if you grip it too hard. But that’s part of the point. The BYOK isn’t trying to impress you with build quality. It’s trying to get out of your way.

For $199, it’s a niche tool. If you already have a reliable distraction-free workflow, you probably don’t need it. But if you’re still hunting for that perfect setup , the one that makes writing feel like writing and nothing else , the BYOK might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.
