The digital comics platform Webtoon is introducing a suite of new features for its user-generated content hub, Canvas, aimed at empowering creators to expand their global reach and increase their earnings. This strategic overhaul focuses on providing tools for audience growth and deeper analytics, with a headline initiative being an AI-powered translation tool designed to break down language barriers for manga artists.

This optional feature will allow creators to localize their scripts into multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, and Traditional Chinese. A beta version will launch for English-speaking Canvas users this spring, with a broader rollout planned for later this summer. The company emphasizes that the tool is built to assist, not replace, human creativity, giving artists full control over their work while simplifying the process of reaching an international audience.

Alongside the translation program, Webtoon is launching a revamped creator dashboard with enhanced analytics. This update promises improved insights into series performance and readership demographics, coupled with new tools to manage community interaction. Furthermore, the platform’s ad revenue share program will become accessible to all creators working in any language supported on Canvas, opening new monetization avenues.

Webtoon president Yongsoo Kim framed these changes as a direct response to the hurdles creators face in traditional distribution. “For a long time, language barriers and distribution challenges have limited creators’ reach,” Kim stated. The goal with these tools is to help creators “grow their audience, build fandoms, and earn more from their work” while maintaining their creative vision.

The technical approach behind the translation tool involves a hybrid model. Kim explained it utilizes a combination of Webtoon’s own proprietary language model and a powerful external large language model, or LLM. The system processes only the textual elements of a comic page, and no content is stored or used for further training. To ensure translation consistency and narrative context, the tool includes a glossary section where creators can input key terms and series-specific information.

Kim acknowledged that the AI’s effectiveness will evolve with a series. “The model will have relatively less context for titles that have just started,” he noted, adding that translation quality will improve as more episodes are published and processed. Given the potential for errors inherent in AI, creators are encouraged to review outputs, and a reporting system will allow both artists and readers to flag mistakes for Webtoon’s quality assurance team.

When asked about potential reader skepticism regarding AI use, Kim reiterated that the translation feature is entirely optional. Translated versions of a series will be removed if a creator chooses to opt out. “We strongly believe that this kind of technology should only be used to help our creators, not replace them,” Kim said. He indicated that the translation program is just the beginning, with the company exploring other AI-driven support tools that could genuinely aid creators in their daily workflows.
