Google has quietly updated its official guidance on optimizing for AI-powered search, now making it crystal clear that LLMs.txt files have no bearing on Google Search rankings. The search giant explicitly stated that Google Search does not utilize these files in any capacity, regardless of how they are formatted or structured.
The company revised its documentation with a key clarification, which I’ve highlighted here: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search (including its generative AI capabilities), as Google Search itself doesn’t use them. Note that Google may discover, crawl, and index many kinds of files in addition to HTML on a website: this doesn’t mean that the file is treated in a special way.”
A new note was also appended to the page, reading: “It’s completely fine if you decide to create and maintain LLMS.txt files (or other similar files) for other services or systems that use these files. Doing so won’t harm (nor help) your visibility or rankings in Google Search, as Google Search ignores them.”

Why this matters for SEO professionals. The industry has been grappling with confusion over how Google Search interacts with LLMs.txt files, Markdown files, and other AI-oriented formats. The bottom line is that while Google Search may discover, crawl, and index these files just like any other content, they are not given any special treatment. Adding them to your site will neither boost nor damage your search visibility. The takeaway is simple: focus your optimization efforts on traditional HTML and structured data, not on speculative AI file formats.
