With the release of iOS 26.4, Apple has quietly introduced two new features for CarPlay, and the groundwork is already laid for another major enhancement that should arrive soon.

The first addition is support for AI voice assistant apps. While chatbots and conversational AI have grown increasingly powerful, their usefulness behind the wheel has been limited until now. iOS 26.4 changes that by introducing a brand new app category called “voice-based conversational apps.” Historically, CarPlay has only permitted specific types of apps, but this update opens the door for AI chatbots to operate within the system. Both ChatGPT and Perplexity have already launched dedicated CarPlay apps, allowing drivers to interact with these assistants hands-free. Google Gemini and Claude are expected to follow in the near future.

Apple has imposed clear safety guidelines. AI apps must prioritize voice interaction and cannot display text or images to minimize driver distraction. Additionally, you cannot replace Siri as your default assistant, at least for now. Still, the arrival of native third-party AI apps marks a meaningful step forward for anyone who regularly relies on these tools.

The second new feature is the Ambient Music widget. iOS 26 first brought widgets to CarPlay, offering glanceable information like weather, reminders, and HomeKit controls. Now, iOS 26.4 adds a dedicated Ambient Music widget. You can enable it by navigating to Settings > General > CarPlay > Widgets on your iPhone. From there, you can add the widget to your stacks and quickly start mood-based playlists for Chill, Productivity, Sleep, or Wellbeing. It mirrors the same functionality now available on the iPhone Home Screen in iOS 26.4. Since widgets are still a relatively new concept for CarPlay, seeing Apple expand the options so quickly is a positive sign.

Looking ahead, video in the car is finally on the horizon. Apple first announced this feature at WWDC last year, promising it as part of iOS 26.0. It never shipped, but evidence from the iOS 26.4 beta cycle suggests it is very close. Developer Thomas Dye managed to get the interface running and shared a preview video. However, the shipping version of iOS 26.4 does not appear to include the feature yet, indicating it may need additional refinement. When it does launch, expect a gradual rollout, as automakers must formally approve the feature for their vehicles.
