Apple has reportedly placed development of its high-end Mac Pro desktop computer on hold, shifting its strategic focus toward the newer Mac Studio as the primary solution for professional users. According to insights shared by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the technology giant has effectively sidelined the Mac Pro, viewing the Mac Studio as the definitive present and future of its pro desktop lineup.
Gurman’s recent Power On newsletter indicates that while Apple is actively developing a high-end M5 Ultra chip, the company’s attention is currently concentrated exclusively on integrating this processor into a refreshed Mac Studio model. This narrow focus strongly implies that a meaningful Mac Pro update is unlikely to arrive in 2026. Although Gurman has not completely dismissed the possibility of an M5 Ultra-equipped Mac Pro emerging eventually, he has not uncovered any concrete evidence that such a device is currently in active development.
Over recent years, the Mac Pro has faced challenges in maintaining its relevance among professional customers. For many, the machine has become somewhat redundant, functioning essentially as a bulkier and more costly version of the Mac Studio, distinguished primarily by its PCIe expansion slots. Apple’s most recent update to the Mac Pro occurred in June 2023, when it received the M2 Ultra chip. Gurman’s cautious phrasing suggests that the long-term viability of the Mac Pro could now be in question, as Apple appears to be channeling its innovation and resources into the more streamlined Mac Studio platform.
