Meta has expanded its artificial intelligence capabilities with the acquisition of WaveForms, an AI audio startup specializing in voice technology. The deal, reported by The Information, marks another strategic move by the tech giant to bolster its Superintelligence Labs division. This follows closely on the heels of Meta’s recent purchase of PlayAI, signaling a clear focus on advancing its audio and speech recognition technologies.

Founded just eight months ago, WaveForms had already secured $40 million in funding from Andreessen Horowitz, achieving a pre-money valuation of $160 million according to PitchBook. The startup’s rapid growth and cutting-edge research likely made it an attractive target for Meta’s AI ambitions.

Key members of WaveForms’ leadership team, including co-founders Alexis Conneau, a former researcher at Meta and OpenAI, and Coralie Lemaitre, an ex-Google advertising strategist, have reportedly transitioned to Meta. Conneau’s background is particularly notable, he played a pivotal role in developing GPT4-o Advanced Voice Mode during his tenure at OpenAI.

Questions remain about whether Kartikay Khandelwal, the startup’s third co-founder and chief technologist, will also join Meta, along with the fate of its remaining 14 employees. WaveForms has since taken down its website, but its LinkedIn profile highlights its mission to solve the Speech Turing Test, a benchmark for distinguishing between human and AI-generated speech. The company was also pioneering Emotional General Intelligence,” an innovative approach to understanding self-awareness and emotional management in AI systems.

This acquisition underscores Meta’s aggressive push into next-generation AI, particularly in voice and emotional intelligence applications. With WaveForms’ expertise now under its umbrella, the company is well-positioned to compete in an increasingly crowded AI landscape.
