Cyberpunk 2077 has achieved yet another major sales milestone for CD Projekt Red, proving that despite its rocky launch, the dystopian RPG continues to deliver remarkable results for the Polish developer. The game has now surpassed 40 million units sold, building on the 35 million sales reported back in November and demonstrating sustained commercial momentum.

“40 million copies sold shows the incredible, lasting strength of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD Projekt does best , creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years,” said Michał Nowakowski, joint-CEO of the company. “It’s a great foundation for our upcoming projects in this universe, including the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime arriving this fall.”

For context, The Witcher 3 has sold 65 million units globally. Both figures represent extraordinary achievements in the gaming industry. A Cyberpunk 2077 trading card game also recently shattered crowdfunding records on Kickstarter.

The reasons behind Cyberpunk 2077’s enduring success aren’t hard to pinpoint. The Switch 2 version released last year, the continued popularity of the Netflix series Cyberpunk Edgerunners (which is getting a second season), and frequent discounts have all played a role. The game is currently 70 percent off on Steam, for instance.

CD Projekt Red has long committed to long-term support for its titles, a strategy amplified here due to the game’s troubled debut. The turning point widely credited for Cyberpunk 2077’s revival is the excellent Phantom Liberty expansion, which launched in autumn 2023 alongside a major 2.0 systems overhaul. Support continues even now, with a PS5 Pro update that Digital Foundry praised for making the game look significantly better.

A sequel is in development. Cyberpunk 2 is being handled by CD Projekt Red’s newer Boston office in the US, which will serve as the franchise’s future home. Meanwhile, the company’s Poland headquarters is focused on The Witcher 4 while overseeing an unprecedented expansion for The Witcher 3 titled Songs of the Past.

CD Projekt has also rebranded to CD Projekt Red, reflecting that game development is now the company’s sole focus after spinning off its distribution and GOG divisions.
