Gmail’s live translation feature arrives for Android and iOS

Following last month’s big reveal at I/O 2026, Google has started testing Gmail Live on both Android and iOS devices. The new feature enables users to receive real-time translations of emails as they arrive, removing language barriers without requiring a separate app or manual copy-pasting.

When a message comes in a foreign language, Gmail Live automatically detects it and offers an instant translation overlay. Users can tap to view the original text at any time, and the system learns from corrections to improve accuracy over time. The translation engine works with dozens of languages and supports both incoming and outgoing messages, meaning you can compose replies in your native tongue and have them translated before sending.

Early testers report smooth performance on recent flagship phones, though Google notes that older devices may experience slight delays with longer emails. The feature is rolling out gradually to Gmail subscribers with active internet connections, and it requires no additional setup beyond opting into the trial from the app’s settings menu.

Gmail Live represents a significant step toward Google’s broader goal of frictionless global communication.
