Rematch Launches Without Crossplay Due to Tech Issues, Still a Hit on Steam

The highly anticipated 5v5 soccer game Rematch has launched successfully on Steam despite missing its promised crossplay functionality at release. Developer Sloclap faced unexpected technical hurdles implementing cross-platform play, leading to a last-minute announcement that disappointed some fans. However, strong player numbers suggest the omission hasn’t significantly impacted the game’s reception.

Sloclap had repeatedly indicated crossplay was planned for launch, with developers stating as recently as March they were pushing hard to include the feature. The studio only confirmed its absence on June 16, just before early access began. This delayed communication drew criticism from players expecting seamless multiplayer across platforms from day one.

In an official statement, the development team acknowledged their misstep: “We should have communicated sooner about the crossplay delay and sincerely apologize for the frustration caused.” They explained that as their first crossplay title, Rematch presented unforeseen technical challenges that couldn’t be resolved in time for launch. The studio emphasized that implementing crossplay remains their top priority alongside critical bug fixes.

Currently, the team is focusing on resolving immediate performance issues reported by players, including lag spikes, frame rate drops, and server synchronization problems. Once these stability concerns are addressed, developers will shift attention to promised post-launch features like tournament support, expanded leaderboards, and new game modes.

Despite the missing feature, Rematch has enjoyed a strong debut on Steam, peaking at nearly 93,000 concurrent players during its first full day of release. While weekend numbers may climb higher, these figures already represent a successful launch for the competitive sports title. The developer plans to share a detailed roadmap for future updates once they have clearer timelines for implementing crossplay and other planned features.
