Greg Brockman Takes the Helm of OpenAI Products in Latest Shakeup

▼ Summary

– OpenAI is reorganizing to unify its product offerings, with cofounder Greg Brockman officially leading product strategy.
– The company will merge ChatGPT and Codex into a single core product team to create a unified experience.
– Thibault Sottiaux will lead the core product and platform across consumer, enterprise, and developer surfaces, while Nick Turley moves to revamp enterprise products.
– The reorganization aims to refocus on key areas like ChatGPT and Codex amid increasing competition from Anthropic and Google.
– OpenAI faces pressure to simplify offerings ahead of a potential IPO, following recent executive departures and a medical leave by CEO Fidji Simo.

OpenAI has informed employees of a major internal restructuring aimed at streamlining its product lineup, according to sources familiar with the matter. The company confirmed to WIRED that cofounder and president Greg Brockman will now permanently lead product strategy, in addition to his responsibilities overseeing AI infrastructure. Brockman had been filling this role on an interim basis while Fidji Simo, the CEO of AGI deployment, was on medical leave; that arrangement is now permanent.

“We’re consolidating our product efforts to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future, to win across both consumer and enterprise,” Brockman wrote in an internal memo reviewed by WIRED. He noted that OpenAI’s offerings are naturally converging, prompting the decision to merge ChatGPT and Codex into a single, unified experience.

The reorganization will fold ChatGPT, the AI coding agent Codex, and the developer-facing API into one core product team. OpenAI explains that Codex is increasingly driving both consumer and enterprise products, which are gaining the capability to perform autonomous digital tasks on behalf of users.

Two other executives are stepping into expanded roles as part of the shakeup. Thibault Sottiaux, who previously led Codex, will now oversee the core product and platform across consumer, enterprise, and developer surfaces. Sottiaux was instrumental in building Codex into one of the company’s fastest-growing products ever. Meanwhile, Nick Turley, OpenAI’s longtime head of ChatGPT, is moving to a new position focused on revamping enterprise products. Turley will continue his work on ChatGPT, which he has helped grow to over 900 million weekly active users since taking over in 2022.

These changes mark the latest leadership shift as OpenAI aims to zero in on key product areas, including ChatGPT, Codex, and its forthcoming “everything app.” Last month, the company announced several executive changes, including Simo’s medical leave. OpenAI previously stated that Brockman would manage product strategy during her absence. The company tells WIRED that Simo remains on leave and is expected to return, adding that she collaborated directly with Brockman on these organizational moves.

Over the past year, OpenAI has faced intensifying competition from rivals such as Anthropic in coding and Google in consumer chatbots. Company leaders hope that simplifying its product offerings will strengthen its position ahead of a potential IPO, which could occur later this year.

Last month also saw the departure of several other executives, including Kevin Weil, head of the AI workspace for scientists; Bill Peebles, head of Sora; and Srinivas Narayanan, chief technology officer of enterprise applications.

This story is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
