OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 Boosts Efficiency and Coding Performance

▼ Summary

– OpenAI announced GPT-5.5, its “smartest and most intuitive” model, which excels at tasks like coding, online research, and working across different tools.
– The model can handle complex, multi-part tasks autonomously, planning, using tools, and checking its work without step-by-step guidance.
– GPT-5.5 includes the “strongest set of safeguards to date” and uses “significantly fewer” tokens for tasks in Codex.
– The rollout begins Thursday for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise ChatGPT tiers and Codex.
– The release intensifies competition with Anthropic, as both companies race toward potential IPOs and dominate AI coding and enterprise tools.

OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.5, describing it as the company’s “smartest and most intuitive to use model yet, and the next step toward a new way of getting work done on a computer.” The announcement comes just one month after the release of GPT-5.4, but the new iteration is said to “excel” at tasks including writing and debugging code, conducting online research, creating spreadsheets and documents, and seamlessly working across multiple tools.

“Instead of carefully managing every step, you can give GPT-5.5 a messy, multi-part task and trust it to plan, use tools, check its work, navigate through ambiguity, and keep going,” OpenAI stated. The company also emphasized that this version includes its “strongest set of safeguards to date” and can use “significantly fewer” tokens to complete tasks within Codex.

Rollout begins Thursday for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers of ChatGPT, as well as Codex. A more powerful version, GPT-5.5 Pro, will be available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users.

This launch marks the latest escalation in the intensifying rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic, as both companies race toward potential public offerings later this year. Anthropic recently released Claude Opus 4.7 and introduced Mythos Preview, a private model it claims is uniquely advanced in cybersecurity. OpenAI quickly countered with GPT-5.4-Cyber, a model designed to identify cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Both firms are now aggressively competing to dominate the AI coding and enterprise tool markets, with OpenAI recently shifting away from so-called “side quests” to focus on larger revenue streams.

The release of GPT-5.5 also arrives just days before the highly anticipated trial between Elon Musk and OpenAI leaders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. Court proceedings are scheduled to begin Monday in a federal courtroom in Oakland, California.
