The highly anticipated roguelike sequel Hades II arrives on Xbox Game Pass and other Xbox platforms on April 14. This Xbox Play Anywhere title will be available on day one for subscribers, offering a complete experience that incorporates all post-launch patches and bonus content released for other versions. This makes the Xbox release the most definitive edition of the game to date.
Following the monumental success of the original, which redefined the action-roguelike genre, Hades II faced the daunting challenge of building upon a beloved foundation. The development team achieved this by striking a careful balance, retaining the core mechanics that made the first game exceptional while weaving in new systems tailored to a fresh protagonist and story. The result is a familiar yet distinctly evolved adventure centered on Melinoë, the long-lost sister of the original hero, Zagreus.
While the fundamental flow of combat remains, controlling Melinoë introduces significant strategic shifts. Her movement replaces Zagreus’s short dashes with longer ones and a new sprint ability. Her Cast attack transforms from a long-range projectile into an area-of-effect trap centered on her position. A major new addition is the Magick bar, which governs powerful Omega moves, supercharged versions of basic attacks that require careful resource management. This creates a combat rhythm that emphasizes positioning and tactical planning over pure reaction speed.
Melinoë wields a completely new arsenal known as the Nocturnal Arms. This collection of witch-themed weapons ranges from swift blades to a massive axe, with more surprising forms to discover. Each weapon also features multiple Aspects, which fundamentally alter its playstyle, ensuring tremendous variety across every run even before factoring in divine Boons.
The structure of the game world has also expanded. Instead of a single escape route, players are presented with two distinct objectives and paths. One leads deeper into the Underworld to confront the Titan Cronos, while the other ascends toward a besieged Mount Olympus. Each path features unique areas, enemies, bosses, and characters, offering a compelling choice at the start of each attempt. Progression begins at a new hub called The Crossroads, a customizable home base for upgrading gear, altering cosmetics, and deepening relationships with a new cast of characters.
A charming new feature is the inclusion of Animal Familiars. Unlike the temporary companion attacks from the first game, these adorable creatures follow Melinoë on her runs, providing passive assistance, offensive support, and valuable buffs. These elements, combined with a wealth of other additions, ensure Hades II evolves the formula in meaningful ways while preserving the tight gameplay and compelling narrative that defined its predecessor. The journey begins on April 14 for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
