The move underscores the significant financial pressures and market recalibrations facing even the largest automakers as global EV adoption progresses unevenly.
Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) stated there is no longer a viable path forward for bringing the Afeela models to market. This conclusion came directly after Honda announced a comprehensive reassessment of its EV strategy, which included taking a writedown of up to 2.5 trillion yen, or roughly $15.7 billion. This financial hit marks Honda’s first annual loss in over seven decades as a public company. As part of that broader pullback, Honda also canceled its own Honda Zero Series models, with the Afeela program becoming a collateral casualty.
In an official release, SHM explained that Honda’s revised strategy means the joint venture can no longer access certain key technologies and assets originally promised. The venture, established in late 2022 to combine Sony’s tech prowess with Honda’s automotive manufacturing expertise, will now refund the $200 deposits placed by prospective customers. The announcement brings a sudden end to a project that began with the Vision-S concept reveal at CES in 2020 and had recently begun trial production in Ohio.
The Afeela was conceived as a high-tech showcase, arguably more a rolling entertainment platform than a conventional car. Its design featured a panoramic dashboard screen, an array of sensors for advanced driver-assistance, and deep integration with Sony’s gaming and entertainment ecosystems. Promises included the ability for PlayStation 5 owners to stream games directly to the vehicle. Despite these innovations and gradual progress toward production, the model could not survive the broader industry contraction.
This cancellation is a prominent example of the widespread EV retrenchment occurring across the auto sector. While electric vehicle sales continue growing in markets like China and Europe, many manufacturers are paring back ambitious plans due to high development costs, slower-than-expected demand in some regions, and intensifying competition. Companies are now focusing on developing more affordable models to counter an influx of lower-priced vehicles, particularly from Chinese automakers.
The future of the Sony Honda Mobility partnership itself is now uncertain. The venture stated that discussions about its next steps are ongoing.
