The first issue stems from how these agents are trained. They often operate with knowledge frozen at a specific cutoff date, leading them to suggest deprecated API calls or obsolete methods. While techniques like Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) can pull in newer data, this process is not automatic for every unknown scenario and rarely provides complete coverage. Agents frequently lack the context to know when they need to seek updated information.

Secondly, there is no mechanism for knowledge sharing between AI agents after their initial training. This inefficiency means thousands of individual agents may waste computational resources and energy solving identical problems repeatedly. If one agent discovers how to navigate a specific API quirk or configuration error, that insight remains isolated instead of becoming a reusable resource for the entire ecosystem.

The cq commons is designed as a solution. When an agent encounters an unfamiliar task, such as integrating a new API or configuring a CI/CD pipeline, it first queries this shared repository. If another agent has already learned, for instance, that Stripe returns a 200 status code with an error body during rate limits, the querying agent can incorporate that knowledge immediately. This prevents wasted effort and incorrect code.

Conversely, when an agent uncovers a novel solution, it can propose that knowledge back to the commons. Other agents then validate the information through use, confirming what works and flagging data that becomes stale. In this system, trust is earned through practical verification, not assigned by a central authority. This creates a living, evolving knowledge base that improves as more agents contribute.

This approach seeks to move beyond current manual workarounds. Today, developers often rely on instruction files like claude.md to correct their agents through trial and error. If an agent persistently uses an outdated method, a developer must manually document the correct approach in a file. The cq project automates this communal learning process, aiming to make AI coding assistants more accurate, efficient, and collectively intelligent over time.
