Originally published on: December 21, 2025
▼ Summary

– YouTube Music has been testing a new Now Playing screen redesign for over a year, featuring a cleaner icon-based switcher for “Song” and “Video.”
– The redesign modernizes the progress bar by making it rounded and thickening it during scrubbing, aligning it with the main YouTube app’s design.
– The three bottom tabs have been consolidated into a single “Up Next” tab, with the Lyrics and Related tabs removed from that location.
– Lyrics functionality has been moved into the carousel, with some designs placing it prominently after the thumbs up/down controls for easier access.
– This redesign enables a dual-pane view combining controls and the queue, but the update is not yet widely rolled out despite increased visibility in testing.

The latest redesign of YouTube Music’s Now Playing screen is rolling out to users, bringing a cleaner interface and significant changes to how listeners interact with lyrics and their queue. This update, which has been in testing for over a year on both Android and iOS, modernizes the player while aiming to improve the overall user experience.

A key visual improvement is the updated “Song” and “Video” switcher, which now uses clear icons. This design is a welcome change, preserving a familiar feature that users rely on while offering a more polished look. The alternative designs that removed this element entirely were less intuitive, so this refined version strikes a better balance.

The familiar layout of the playback controls, progress bar, and carousel remains mostly intact. However, the progress bar itself has been subtly updated with rounded ends and a thicker line that appears during scrubbing. This small tweak brings the app’s visual language closer to that of the main YouTube platform, creating a more cohesive feel across Google’s services.

The most substantial shift involves the three bottom tabs. The interface now prominently features a single “Up Next” tab, which is dynamically renamed to reflect the current album, playlist, or mix. The dedicated “Lyrics” and “Related” tabs have been removed from this bar. To find similar music, users can simply tap on the song’s title.

Lyrics have been integrated directly into the main carousel. In some versions of the test, the lyrics option appears immediately after the thumbs-up/down buttons, while in others it is placed as a fourth item, slightly off-screen. The first placement is generally considered more user-friendly given how frequently people access song lyrics.

This restructuring enables a useful dual-pane view that combines playback controls with the upcoming queue. It’s a smart consolidation of features, though it does mean other commonly used functions had to be relocated within the app’s architecture. While more users have begun to see this new design in recent days, it is not yet a universal update. After extensive A/B testing that began last November, the hope is that YouTube Music has finalized this design for a full public release.
