Rather than relying solely on massive facilities, Crusoe manufactures modular data centers known as Spark units in its own factories. These compact modules are then transported via truck to locations with available power capacity. According to the Wall Street Journal, this approach reduces construction timelines from years to mere weeks.

Chase Lochmiller, co-founder and chief executive of Crusoe, emphasized the necessity of vertical integration in the AI sector. “Getting there means controlling the infrastructure from electrons to tokens,” he said. He characterized this shift as an era of abundance driven by artificial intelligence.

Lochmiller noted that serving models to users requires significantly fewer chips than training them. “You don’t actually need an Abilene to do that,” Lochmiller told the Journal. Running inference from such a site “can be a bit of overkill”, he added. A manufacturing plant outside Denver is expected to produce up to one gigawatt of Spark capacity annually. Existing units are already operational in Reno, Nevada, powered by repurposed electric car batteries and solar panels.

Financial Metrics and Board Expansion

Crusoe reports a total contracted value exceeding $140 billion. The company claims more than 6GW of gross contracted capacity, with 1GW currently operational, and cloud bookings that have increased more than 20 times year-over-year. Its managed inference product, launched late last year, has surpassed $100 million in contracted annual recurring revenue. Lochmiller revealed to the Journal that this business generated almost no revenue at the start of 2026 but reached that run rate by summer.

The company employs over 1,800 people across five countries and has opened new offices in Bellevue and New York. Crusoe generates revenue across three layers: data centers, GPUs, and tokens. “We sell data centres, GPUs and tokens,” Lochmiller told the Journal. This broad strategy has occasionally caused friction with the board, which has reportedly suggested narrowing the company’s focus.

To bolster governance, Crusoe appointed three independent directors on the same day as the funding announcement. They are Cloudflare’s chief financial officer Thomas Seifert, former Digital Realty chief executive Bill Stein, and Redwood Materials founder JB Straubel. Seifert will chair the audit committee. Straubel, who co-founded Tesla and served as its chief technology officer until 2019, now leads Redwood Materials, which supplies the microgrid of solar and repurposed EV batteries powering Spark units.

“Grid demand is growing faster than infrastructure can keep up, and that bottleneck is real for AI,” Straubel said. He argued that the solution lies in building energy systems directly at the point of use. This gap in infrastructure is attracting significant capital; TAR recently raised $120 million at a $1 billion valuation for off-grid AI power on September 10. Meanwhile, Crusoe itself signed a $13 billion cloud deal with Jane Street this month.

(Source: The Next Web)

Crusoe Energy secured a $3.9 billion Series F funding round, bringing its post-money valuation to $30.9 billion with support from major investors including Nvidia and Mubadala Capital.
