Ryan Goldberg<\/a>, 40, from Georgia<\/a>, and Kevin Martin<\/a>, 36, from Texas<\/a>, each received a four-year prison sentence<\/strong> for their roles in facilitating ransomware campaigns during 2023, according to an April 30 statement from the U. S. Department of Justice<\/a>. Both men pleaded guilty to the charges in December 2025.<\/p>\n\n

The pair collaborated with Angelo Martino<\/a>, 41, of Florida<\/a>, who pleaded guilty on April 20 to working with BlackCat. Martino, a former ransomware negotiator, is scheduled for sentencing in July.<\/p>\n\n

The BlackCat ransomware group<\/strong>, also known as ALPHV<\/a>, first appeared in 2021. From 2022 through 2024, it ranked among the most aggressive and notorious ransomware operations, targeting victims worldwide. Attackers frequently demanded millions in ransom payments<\/a> for decryption keys. The group also employed double-extortion tactics<\/strong>, leaking stolen data from victims who declined to pay.<\/p>\n\n

According to court documents, Goldberg and Martin helped launch ransomware attacks against a variety of victims and funneled 20% of any ransom payments<\/strong> they received to BlackCat administrators.<\/p>\n\n

In one incident, Goldberg, Martin, and Martino collected a Bitcoin ransom<\/a> worth $1.2 million<\/strong>. They gave 20% to BlackCat and split the remaining 80% among themselves. Prosecutors condemned the men for using the specialized skills they had gained in the cybersecurity field to actively commit the very crimes they were supposed to prevent.<\/p>\n\n
