Factorial Energy has entered a strategic joint development agreement with Japanese materials supplier Mitsui Kinzoku, marking another critical step in its push to commercialize all-solid-state batteries. This partnership underscores the industry’s growing recognition that developing next-generation power storage is too complex for any single entity to manage in isolation. By collaborating with specialized firms, Factorial aims to overcome the manufacturing hurdles that have long stalled solid-state adoption in the automotive sector.
“Battery innovation can’t be done by one single company,” stated Siyu Huang, chief executive of Factorial Energy, highlighting the necessity of a collaborative approach. The move follows Factorial’s public listing on Nasdaq in June and signals a shift toward building a robust supply chain rather than relying solely on internal R&D. The company retains foundational intellectual property rights regarding all-solid electrolytes, positioning itself as a key licensor in a broader ecosystem of partners.
The strategy involves dividing technical responsibilities among various industry players. Posco Future M is tasked with producing anodes and cathodes, while Korea’s Phil Energy provides essential manufacturing tools. Meanwhile, Factorial is working closely with SK On to refine scaling processes. This coalition model allows each partner to focus on their specific area of expertise, theoretically accelerating time-to-market for viable battery solutions.
European automakers are already engaging deeply with this new technology. Factorial holds joint development agreements with Volkswagen’s PowerCo division and Hyundai. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz successfully tested a modified EQS capable of traveling 1,200 kilometers on Factorial cells in September 2025. Mercedes serves as both a financial backer and a testing partner, while Stellantis provided the Dodge demonstrator vehicle. Huang noted that the company is well-positioned to meet volume demands in both North American and European markets, despite no vehicles currently featuring these batteries hitting production lines.
Current prototypes showcase significant performance leaps over existing technology. The semi-solid FEST cell delivers up to 375 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg) and is currently installed in prototype Mercedes and Dodge vehicles. Looking further ahead, the all-solid Solstice cell targets an impressive 450 Wh/kg, approximately double the energy density of standard lithium-ion batteries. This advanced cell utilizes a sulfide electrolyte produced by Mitsui at a dedicated facility in Saitama, Japan. Karma Automotive is slated to become the first manufacturer to ship vehicles equipped with Solstice technology in 2028.
However, the timeline for widespread adoption remains aggressive. While announcements suggest rapid progress, the reality of mass-producing all-solid-state batteries is more nuanced. Competitor ProLogium is already mass-producing all-solid-state cells in Taiwan at a rate of about 6,000 packs annually, achieving 381 Wh/kg. ProLogium recently broke ground on its European gigafactory in Dunkirk, France, which will be subsidized by the French government and located near the Gravelines nuclear plant.
The Dunkirk site represents a potential European champion in solid-state production, starting with 0.8 GWh capacity in 2028 and expanding to 12 GWh by 2032. Unlike previous attempts by companies like Northvolt, this project is Taiwanese-owned, reflecting the global nature of the race for battery dominance. Despite these developments, skepticism persists within the industry. Executives from LG Energy Solution have suggested that large-format solid-state batteries may not reach electric vehicles for a decade, noting that the technology will likely appear in consumer electronics first due to the difficulties associated with scaling up cell sizes. Factorial’s response to these challenges remains rooted in its collaborative model, believing that shared resources and expertise are the only path to overcoming the significant engineering barriers facing the industry.
