The blaze, which erupted in early June inside an unfinished structure, revealed that first responders were entering a hazardous environment with critical information missing. Local firefighters reported discovering no functioning alarm systems, no active suppression mechanisms, and three dead hydrants. Most concerning was the apparent loss of vital safety documentation, which reportedly burned along with the building.
Steve Matisz, chief of the Barker Fire Department, described his crew’s experience as navigating a dangerous unknown. He noted that his team faced heavy black smoke from unidentified chemicals because the necessary safety sheets had been destroyed. “It’s been a difficult situation,” Matisz said. He expressed skepticism regarding the claim that the safety documents perished in the flames, highlighting the confusion surrounding site preparedness.
The facility sits on a former coal mine near Lake Ontario and represents one of New York’s most ambitious AI data center buildouts, with a total valuation of $3.2 billion. The project involves a tangled web of stakeholders and financial arrangements. TeraWulf owns and operates the campus, leasing the land from a company controlled by its own CEO. UK-based AI firm Fluidstack is slated to run the center, while Google holds warrants for a future 14 percent equity stake and has guaranteed Fluidstack’s lease payments. Additionally, major AI developer Anthropic is among the clients whose computing needs the facility aims to satisfy.
In response to the incident, TeraWulf asserted responsibility for emergency preparedness and coordination with local authorities. Kerri Langlais, the company’s chief strategy officer, stated that the firm implemented new measures following an after-action review with the county. These improvements included installing Knox boxes, adding extra hydrants, and creating safety data sheet “go-bags” for first responders.
Despite these assurances, Matisz remained unconvinced by mid-August. While he acknowledged that a Knox box representative had visited the site and scheduled further meetings, he offered a blunt assessment of the water supply infrastructure. “As far as I know, [they] are still dry… I haven’t seen work done on them.” This discrepancy between corporate claims and on-the-ground reality underscores the complex challenges facing rapid industrial development in established communities.
