Galaxy Z Fold 8’s wider design sells faster than Samsung expected

▼ Summary
– Samsung increased Galaxy Z Fold 8 production before launch, but pre-order demand for the smaller model is exceeding expectations, causing low stock and delays.
– Samsung allocated 2.8 million units for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 versus 2 million for the larger Fold 8 Ultra, yet the Fold 8 is still selling faster than anticipated.
– The “Pistachio” web-exclusive color for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 was temporarily blocked on Samsung’s website and is now delayed until October.
– Carriers report that certain Galaxy Z Fold 8 colors will sell out before the pre-order period ends in the second week of August.
– The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has ample supply, suggesting users prefer the Fold 8’s wider aspect ratio and more compact profile.
Samsung may have boosted production of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 ahead of its official launch, but demand is already outpacing expectations. The more compact foldable is selling so quickly during pre-orders that certain configurations are reportedly facing stock shortages and shipping delays.
The company initially anticipated stronger sales for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 compared to its larger, pricier sibling, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Earlier reports indicated Samsung had allocated 2.8 million units for the Fold 8, versus just 2 million units for the Ultra. Yet even with that larger supply, the smaller device is running low.
According to a leak from Lanzuk on Naver, sales for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 are exceeding Samsung’s internal forecasts. Unit distribution is becoming a challenge, and there is a real risk of the device selling out in key markets such as South Korea, as highlighted by tipster @IceUniverse on X (formerly Twitter).
Just today, the web-exclusive “Pistachio” color variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 briefly became available again for pre-order after being blocked on Samsung’s website. While the checkout error has been resolved, delivery dates have now slipped to October.
Carriers are also feeling the pressure. The leak suggests that some color options will not last beyond the second or third week of August, which coincides with the end of Samsung’s pre-order window. In other words, certain finishes may sell out before the pre-order period even closes.
Meanwhile, there appears to be no such issue for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Samsung’s supply is described as “ample,” according to the report. If accurate, this trend suggests consumers are actively choosing the wider aspect ratio and more pocket-friendly design of the standard Fold 8 over the larger Ultra model.
We have seen this pattern before, but never with a device as thin as the Galaxy Z Fold 8. It could prove to be a genuine hit for users who want a foldable phone without the towering height that has long defined Samsung’s lineup.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra remain available for pre-order through August 7.
