Boox has unveiled the Palma 3, a significant evolution in its lineup of smartphone-sized e-readers. This release arrives nearly two years after the previous model, bringing a sleek redesign and expanded functionality to justify a notable price increase. While the Palma 2 debuted in 2024 at $279.99, the new Palma 3 is priced at $339.99 and is expected to be available soon.
The hardware overhaul is immediately apparent. The device retains the familiar 6.13-inch, 300ppi E Ink Carta display that defined its predecessor, but it now features a more premium build. It is encased in an anodized aluminum frame with a textured fiberglass backplate, offering a substantial upgrade in aesthetics and durability. Despite the external changes, the internal specifications remain robust for an e-reader. It is powered by a Qualcomm Q-6690 octa-core processor, paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Users can expand storage further using a microSD card. Additional features include a 3950mAh battery, a 16-megapixel rear camera, and a fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button.
Software performance is also being refreshed. Unlike the original Palma and Palma 2, which shipped with Android 11 and Android 13 respectively, the Palma 3 runs on Android 16. This positions the device just one generation behind the latest OS version, ensuring a more modern mobile experience. A key functional addition is support for the Boox InkSense Plus active stylus. This allows users to transform the e-reader into a digital notepad, compatible with their preferred note-taking applications. However, the stylus is not included in the box. Purchasing the optional accessory adds $46 to the total cost, bringing the full setup closer to the price point of competitors like the Remarkable Paper Pure.
