Google has expanded the capabilities of its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) by introducing cart transfer and broader checkout testing features within the Merchant Center hub. This update allows merchants who utilize UCP-powered checkout to enable a specific pathway that lets shoppers move items from Google directly to the merchant’s own website to complete their purchase. These new options are currently rolling out gradually in the United States, with expansions into Australia and Canada scheduled for early next year.

In a holiday shopping post, Ashish Gupta, Google’s VP and GM of Merchant Shopping, highlighted that UCP already facilitates direct checkout for hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers across Google’s ecosystem. The announcement also revealed a U. S. beta launch for Business Agent on YouTube ads and noted that the AI performance insights report is now available in five countries.

Cart Transfer Mechanics and Setup

According to Google’s developer documentation, the cart transfer capability is identified as Transfer to merchant cart. Merchants activate this feature by supporting the Cart API. Recent updates to the docs include a streamlined checklist for this option, which omits requirements for full product feed setup, product warnings, and customer support details. Additionally, a sandbox environment is now available in the same tab where developers can test cart and checkout requests that Google may send.

While the Cart capability was initially mentioned as a draft in March and referenced in a May Google Marketing Live post, it is now being integrated more formally. Merchants with hub access can select the transfer feature during Merchant Center validation. The hub itself is being introduced progressively across the U. S., following the roadmap outlined in the Merchant Center help page. Interested merchants must complete the technical setup, submit an interest form, and await selection to begin using the hub.

New Analytics and Reporting Tools

Google indicates that analytics will soon become a core component of the UCP hub. Developer docs, last updated on September 3, describe a UCP Analytics Reporting dashboard located within the same Merchant Center tab. This feature is accessible to all merchants with UCP enabled and the Performance role. It offers deep insights into the checkout process, tracking everything from the initial click on the Buy button to final purchase completion. Key metrics include average order value and cancellation rates. The dashboard also provides account linking information and highlights top-selling UCP products. Notably, this data is not yet accessible through the Merchant API.

Business Agent Beta and AI Insights Expansion

A significant addition to the suite is the launch of a U. S. beta program for Business Agent on YouTube ads. Qualified retailers who sign up will receive a branded agent embedded in their YouTube ads. This integration allows viewers to browse products and ask questions without leaving the platform. While the announcement confirms the launch, it does not specify the qualification criteria or the duration of the beta period. Business Agent originally went live in Search on January 12 alongside the UCP launch.

Furthermore, the AI performance insights report in Merchant Center is now generally available to merchants in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and the U. S. Initially piloted in July for select U. S. accounts, the report helps merchants understand which product attributes to prioritize. Currently, it supports English-language queries, covers organic AI traffic only, and does not provide click metrics.

Strategic Implications for Retailers

The introduction of cart transfer addresses long-standing concerns retailers raised in January regarding the loss of customer engagement when transactions occur entirely on Google. One retailer previously noted that customers never visit the store, miss out on accessory suggestions from other sellers, and feel less connected to the brand. By enabling a direct path to the merchant’s checkout page with a pre-loaded cart, Google aims to strengthen brand loyalty and improve the overall shopping experience.

The new tools offer complementary perspectives on performance. The AI performance insights report focuses on share of voice, frequency, and product visibility. In contrast, the UCP analytics dashboard provides granular data starting from user interaction with the Buy button through to conversion. As these UCP hub options continue their gradual rollout in the U. S., merchants should monitor the UCP integration tab in Merchant Center for emerging features, particularly the status of the analytics dashboard.
