Runway AI, the $3 billion startup revolutionizing Hollywood with generative AI, is now expanding into the gaming industry. The company recently unveiled plans to launch an interactive gaming experience, signaling its ambition to transform game development through artificial intelligence.

During an exclusive preview, CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela revealed that while the initial consumer-facing product remains basic, limited to text and image generation via a chat interface, AI-generated video games are expected to debut later this year. Runway is already in discussions with major gaming studios, exploring collaborations that could involve leveraging proprietary datasets for training its models.

Valenzuela draws parallels between the gaming industry’s current stance on AI and Hollywood’s initial skepticism. Despite early resistance, generative AI has steadily gained traction in film production, with Runway’s technology contributing to projects like Amazon’s House of David. The CEO notes that partnerships now extend to nearly every major studio and a significant portion of Fortune 100 companies.

“If we can cut movie production time by 40%, the same efficiency gains can apply to game development,” Valenzuela explains. He observes that game studios are embracing AI faster than Hollywood did two years ago, suggesting a rapid shift toward automation in creative workflows.

When questioned about recent acquisition rumors involving Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Valenzuela remained noncommittal, emphasizing Runway’s preference for independence. “We thrive on solving complex challenges, and for now, staying independent aligns with that mission,” he stated.

This development marks another milestone for Runway as it continues pushing the boundaries of AI-powered creativity across entertainment mediums. With gaming poised as its next frontier, the startup could redefine how developers conceptualize and build immersive experiences.
