A new dark fantasy adventure is coming to the world of Dungeons & Dragons, promising a focused, magic-driven experience. Announced at The Game Awards 2025, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is an open-world action game from Invoke Studios and Wizards of the Coast. Players will step into the boots of a formidable spellcaster named Kaatri, a veteran warrior who has forged a dangerous pact to wield otherworldly magic against encroaching darkness.

The protagonist, Kaatri, is voiced by acclaimed actress Tricia Helfer, known for her roles in Battlestar Galactica and Lucifer. According to Jeff Hattam, Vice President of Creative at Invoke Studios, the choice to center the game on a Warlock was deeply personal. He was fascinated by the unique narrative potential of a class that relies on high charisma to deal damage, essentially convincing cosmic entities for power. “I’ve always wondered what kind of person can persuade some of the most powerful beings in this universe to grant them magic,” Hattam explains. “That compelling character concept was the real spark for this entire project.”

This focus ensures Kaatri is no stereotypical “pointy hat wizard.” Her story is described as a darker, more intense tale within the fantasy genre. Magic is the absolute core of the gameplay, serving as the primary tool for every challenge. Players will use a suite of magical abilities, spells, and rituals to explore the expansive world, uncover its secrets, solve environmental puzzles, and engage in combat. “You use those spells to explore, discover the corners of the world, and obviously, you’ll have encounters and use magic against that as well,” Hattam notes.

It is important to clarify that while deeply inspired by the tabletop phenomenon, Warlock is not a traditional RPG. It is a third-person action game, meaning players will not manage a party of companions, though Kaatri will encounter allies on her journey. The development team is crafting a focused, linear narrative rather than a branching, choice-driven story like Baldur’s Gate 3. “We’re not trying to replicate D&D,” Hattam states. “You are playing Kaatri’s narrative. It’s got clear stakes and momentum.” Details on the open world remain scarce, but developers hint that magic will be essential for exploration, with side quests available alongside the main story.

Invoke Studios plans to unveil the first official gameplay footage in the summer of 2026. Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is currently targeting a 2027 release on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms.
