The visionary creator Hideo Kojima has opened up about the ambitious and enigmatic nature of his upcoming horror project, OD, acknowledging the significant creative risks involved. In a recent interview, Kojima expressed uncertainty about whether his groundbreaking concept will ultimately succeed, highlighting a departure from his past work. While titles like Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding introduced novel themes, their underlying systems shared common ground with other games. OD, however, represents a more fundamental challenge, as Kojima and his team are attempting to completely reinvent the service model from the ground up.

He elaborated on this point, stating that he cannot yet reveal the exact nature of the project and admits he does not know if the core idea will function as intended. The cryptic “Knock” trailer, released to commemorate the game’s two-year anniversary since its reveal at The Game Awards 2023, was deliberately packed with clues for dedicated fans to decipher. The project features a notable cast including Hunter Schafer, Sophia Lillis, and the late Udo Kier, whose passing at age 81 occurred after his involvement. Production timelines were impacted by the resolution of the SAG-AFTRA strike for video game performers, pushing some filming into 2026, though it remains unclear how much material Kier completed.

In a characteristically bold statement of intent, Kojima shared his desire to travel globally to visit purportedly haunted locations. His goal is to become the first person to successfully scan a ghost and integrate that data into a video game, an achievement for which he humorously remarked, “I want to get an award for that.” This ambition underscores the experimental and boundary-pushing philosophy driving the development of OD.

The game is being produced in collaboration with Xbox, and its future faced speculation following Microsoft’s widespread restructuring and cancellation of several projects. Despite these industry shifts, OD remains in active development. Kojima is simultaneously managing multiple other ventures, including a separate game titled Physint in partnership with PlayStation. Beyond gaming, his production company is working with A24 on a Death Stranding film and has partnered with Disney for an animated series based on the same franchise, demonstrating his expansive influence across entertainment mediums.
