– This is one of multiple outages X has faced in 2025, including a previous incident in March that Musk attributed to a cyberattack.
A significant service disruption impacted the social media platform X for nearly three hours on Tuesday, leaving thousands of users unable to access the site or app. The widespread outage, which affected the platform owned by Elon Musk, resulted in various error messages appearing for those attempting to connect.
People trying to reach X encountered notifications stating “Something went wrong. Try reloading” or that “Posts aren’t loading right now.” According to data from Downdetector, a service that monitors website and app performance, over 11,800 problem reports were logged by 6:42 a.m. ET. The breakdown of these reports showed that the majority, 61%, were related to the X mobile application, while 27% cited issues with the website and 12% pointed to server connection problems.
The root of the disruption was traced to technical difficulties with Cloudflare, a company that provides content delivery and cybersecurity services. Cloudflare noted it had detected a significant surge in unusual traffic on Tuesday morning. When users attempted to visit x.com or twitter.com, they were sometimes met with a Cloudflare error page displaying an “Internal server error / Error code 500” message. Another prompt instructed users to “Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed,” and in other instances, the website simply failed to load entirely.
Cloudflare provided updates throughout the morning, announcing at 8:13 a.m. ET that changes had been implemented allowing its Cloudflare Access and WARP services to recover. The company confirmed that error rates for these services had returned to normal levels and that WARP access had been restored in London. By 9:42 a.m. ET, the company’s status page declared that a fix was in place and the incident was believed to be resolved, with ongoing monitoring to ensure a full return to normal operations.
The technical issues with Cloudflare had a ripple effect, impacting other major online services beyond X. Affected platforms included OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Sora, the movie social network Letterboxd, e-commerce giant Shopify, ride-sharing service Uber, design tool Canva, dating app Grindr, and Riot Games’ popular title League of Legends.
Representatives for X did not provide an immediate response to requests for comment regarding the outage. Interestingly, the official status page for the X developer platform showed no indication of problems Tuesday morning, instead displaying a message that all systems were operational. X, which operates as a subsidiary of Musk’s xAI company, has experienced several outages already in 2025. This follows a series of rolling outages on March 10, 2025, which Musk attributed to a massive cyberattack on the platform. Later that same month, users reported another brief period of access issues that were resolved within approximately thirty minutes.
