DJI’s New Action Camera Boasts Adjustable Aperture for Superior Low-Light

▼ Summary

– DJI has globally released the Osmo Action 6 action camera (excluding the US), maintaining a similar physical design to its predecessor but adding new features.
– It features an adjustable mechanical aperture from f/2.0 to f/4.0, improving low-light performance and depth of field control without needing filters.
– The camera includes a larger square-format sensor that allows flexible cropping into various aspect ratios for social media and postproduction.
– It supports 4K/120fps video, 1080P/240fps slow-motion, and has 50GB internal storage expandable to 1TB via microSD.
– The Osmo Action 6 is waterproof up to 65 feet, functions in temperatures as low as -4°F, and offers up to 4 hours of battery life under ideal conditions.

DJI has officially launched its new Osmo Action 6 action camera for global markets, following its initial release in China. While the physical design remains similar to the previous model, the camera introduces significant hardware upgrades, including an adjustable mechanical aperture and a larger square sensor. These improvements aim to enhance low-light performance and provide greater flexibility for video cropping and formatting.

The Osmo Action 6 features an aperture that can be manually adjusted from f/2.0 to f/4.0. This mechanical iris allows users to open the aperture wide to capture more light in dim environments or narrow it to increase depth of field in bright conditions. The ability to switch to f/2.0 effectively doubles the light intake compared to the fixed f/2.8 aperture on last year’s model, making it especially useful for evening shoots or indoor recording. Additionally, the adjustable aperture can reduce or eliminate the need for neutral density filters when filming in harsh sunlight.

Another key upgrade is the 1/1.1-inch square CMOS sensor, which is larger than the sensor used in the Osmo Action 5 Pro. The square format supports multiple aspect ratios without requiring the camera to be rotated, simplifying the process of framing shots for different platforms. During editing, this design makes it easy to crop footage into vertical, square, or widescreen formats while retaining image quality and keeping the subject in view.

Video capabilities include 4K recording at up to 120 frames per second in a 4:3 aspect ratio. For slow-motion capture, the camera supports 1080p at 240fps, and through frame interpolation, it can achieve up to 960fps. Internal storage has been increased to 50GB, and users can expand this with a microSD card of up to 1TB.

Battery life is rated at approximately four hours of continuous recording in 1080p at 24fps under ideal conditions. Shooting in 4K or using higher frame rates will reduce battery performance. The Osmo Action 6 is built to withstand challenging environments, operating in temperatures as low as -4°F and remaining waterproof at depths exceeding 65 feet. The camera retains the 2.5-inch rear touchscreen and a smaller 1.46-inch front display for easy framing and settings control.

Pricing and availability vary by region. The camera is available in Europe starting at €379, in the UK at £329, and in Japan for ¥61,270. At this time, DJI has not confirmed a release date for the United States.
